Some rules and stuff
What’s provided to each team?
HPI Sprint 2 with speedo and Saturn 20t motor, 1 clear bodyshell and wing, LED light kit, 1 set of kit tyres to be used during the forced ‘Wet Weather’ simulation stint, 34t pinion
What will each team need to purchase on the day?
One set of racing tyres for £19.99 these will be announced in May. Contenders so far are Sorex 32 or HPI racing tyres. Rims will be the same as come in the kit as they look right and have the right offset. We are testing the wear on a set that has completed approx. 2000 laps.
Additional motors (up to 3) can be purchased for £9 each.
The number of additional tyres you can purchase will be published after more tests for £19.99)
Other rules/Q&A (so far)
You use your own lipo's. We have managed to fit 5000 and 5600 cells in. Over this and it is tight so would have to do some nifty shim work on the top deck.
You only Marshal your own team car, if you touch another team’s car you will get 10 penalty laps.
Rostrum position and start grid is drawn out of a hat.
Start procedure will be classic Le Mans. Read into that what you will :-)
You need to add servo, receiver, transmitter and battery to make the car work.
Pace car will go out if there are any track repairs, computer issues etc.. and will pick up the lead car and slow the pack down to a crawl, no overtaking under a yellow or red flag situation, if you accidentally pass a car you will have give the spot back before the yellow flag is cleared or you will have 10 laps deducted.
Any adjustable components on the car such as droop, ride height, weight, camber, caster, shock oil and springs can be changed.
Cars must remain stock apart from springs.
We will publish a working setup 2 weeks prior to the event so you can get the cars performing well from the very start. This will be given to you with your shell and is done by someone who is not competing (most likely Andy Moore or Jonny Bowden)
The motor will be a Saturn 20, so will have to be installed at test weekend Saturday 28th - Sunday May 29th (Sunday is race day and a special heat will be put on for the 24hr cars. The gearing will be fixed and the gearing of choice at the moment is a 34t pinion and 87 spur. You can have up to three motors to help with performance, but we may allow you to have more if you are burning out motors. Motor temps stabilise at 60c due to the gearing and inboard fan, so we think you might even be able to do 24hr on one motor. Motors cost around £9 each.
BBQ and beer is bring your own, i.e. BBQ is there but you cook your own food, beer and other stuff is also up to you.
The RTR kits usually come with Red shells, we are having clear one's made especially for this event, they will still be 200mm shells so we will be using the offset kit wheels with 'other' tyres. Shells can be collected after Tuesday 5th April so you have plenty of time to get it painted before the official test and shakedown day on Saturday 28th May. Test day will cost £5 per team member and the money is being used to buy the BBQs ?.
The car belongs to the team afterwards and we suggest you keep it as we are going to run this annually and you will be invited back each year.
There will be night racing (more like dusk due to the pitting area illuminating the track) so LED lights have to be fitted in the front and are provided.
You can change the connectors on the speedo but not the speedo itself.
Everyone gets 2 x random 5 minute scrutineering checks, teams can not touch the car during this time and the same driver goes back out after the check.
You receive your car on May 29th at the official test session to enable you to customise and fit your LED lighting kit
Spares will be provided at cost (but of course you won’t need them because these cars are solid beasts!!)
The observant ones of you would have noticed this date is the same as the real 1:1 Le Mans 24hr. That’s because we are going to run at exactly the same time and attempt to share the experience without the cost. Camping is free, either outside or indoors in small tents, as is sleeping on the floor under a pit bench. It’s bound to get messy and dirty, tiring and frustrating but you can be assured regardless of the outcome, it’s going to be a memory that lasts with you forever!
More rules may be added before the event so we suggest you look at the section below periodically to see if there are any new rules for this awesome (yet very tiring) event.
New Rules:
Cars can be collected week starting 16th May
Control Tyres
Will be Sorex 32 with JB inserts on Kit wheels. All sets will be marked and can not be pre mounted. i.e they need to be purchased (at cost) on the day. 1 set will be available to purchase this Saturday or Sunday (28th and 29th) for the official test weekend. We will have an assembly table where they are to be glued up and will be marked by either myself or Ian. We believe the cost will be around £21 a set. The tyres that came with the kit will be used during the event during the wet weather simulation periods so please ENSURE you bring those with you and also it would be to your benefit to test with those tyres and wheels too and maybe find your fastest driver on them. Our test currently show that you may be able to complete the entire 24hrs on 1 set!! however 2 sets of 'Race Tyres' per team will be available. (1 set that you can collect on the 28th or 29th, another set during the 24hr race and of course the 'wet weather' kit tyres).Gearing This event is now open gearing, we are not setting or enforcing the gear ratio. Although I believe the gearing we supplied is correct, with others reporting higher temperatures after 5 minutes racing than I got with a 30 minute test I will leave it up to you to select the right gearing for your driving style. So just to recap, Gear Ratio is now YOUR choice.
Format and costs for this weekend (28th and 29th May) Saturday is Open Practice Format. Doors open at 10:00 and close at 18:00. 1 set of control tyres will be available to purchase at cost. Saturday practice is £25 per team or £5 a person for the entire day, whichever is the cheaper. This is less than half price and just covers wear and tear and staffing. Sunday is Club race day and if we have 6 or more 24hr cars we will run a heat for the 24hr cars that is 30 minutes long! If less than 5 cars they will be 10 minute heats. Cost is £15 for the entire team. Doors open at 09:00 and racing normally finishes around 15:00 depending on numbers. Both days are completely optional. See you on the 11th June if not before :-)
